Paul Brady - Unfinished Business

Paul Brady Unfinished BusinessIt’s been seven years since Paul Brady released a studio album.  Unfinished Business, which arrives on September 8th shows that’s just way too long.  With nine original compositions and two old folk songs,  Unfinished Business  is an understated and highly accomplished blend of influences, stitched together so artfully that you can’t see the seams.

Those styles sometimes emerge in the accompaniment .  The pedal slide guitar that gives country undertones to I like how you think, or the gospel type backing vocals on Oceans of Time.

The title track is a lounge bar number. You’d expect Brady to perform it live with a broad draped over the piano.  That gives way to I Love You But You Love Him with pop sensibilities you’d find in the classic musicals and the short but punchy Something to Change where the horns kick in.  In less skilled hands it could be a mess,  but the whole collection hangs together beautifully.

Those who’d like Brady to contribute more from his traditional repertoire will give forgive him after the final track, Lord Thomas and Fair Ellendar, which is so effective because he doesn’t have to try too hard.  Our hero has the choice between marrying his true love, or the bird with the dosh.   Encouraged by his Mum he chooses the latter, it all goes horribly wrong and everyone one ends up dead.  You can’t get more folk than that can you?

Unfinished Business is released on Proper  Records on September 8th 2017.  Those with sense will go and buy it.
